Following are examples of the many ways in which Avery Dennison employees in more than 60 countries are using these strengths to continuously improve our sustainability performance, as well as the sustainability efforts of our suppliers and customers around the world.
Innovative Environmentally Friendly Initiatives
In North America, a number of our plants are piloting emission control technology that converts solvent manufacturing waste into an energy source that can be used to power specific plant equipment and eliminate 99 percent of those facilities’ volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions.
An Avery Dennison business in North America has significantly reduced its waste stream by recycling one million pounds of polyester waste from cast films for use in post-consumer products such as milk containers.
In Europe and North America we are partnering with waste recycling experts to collect and recycle liner waste from our roll materials customers and, as a result, reduce landfill waste.
From 2005, lighting retrofit projects in North America alone have resulted in an annual carbon dioxide emission decrease of more than 22.6 million pounds and an energy savings in excess of $1.2 million annually for 15 locations. Another 14 sites are in progress.
Our Retail Information Services operations are using water and soy-oil based printing inks for customer materials to reduce the need for hazardous solvents during disposal processes.
We are investigating ways to use solar power in factories that have the technology and appropriate climate around the world.

Making a Sustainable Difference in the Communities
In Which We Operate
In 2006, our charitable giving contributions totaled $1.4 million, enabling a wide range of non-profit organizations to continue to provide life-enhancing services to those in need.
Our employee giving campaigns in North America generate more than $1 million for United Way annually. In addition, many employees participate in community improvement activities during United Way's Day of Caring events across the country.
In China, we are participating with Business for Social Responsibility in a pilot program to enhance local capacity to understand sustainability standards in our facilities.
To instill a global mindset among the next generation of Chinese scientists, we have partnered with local universities to develop and sponsor research internships for promising graduate students.
To further ongoing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) related research and exploration of new ways to apply RFID technologies in China, we recently donated a server to Fudan University's Auto-ID Labs. Joint cooperation on more extensive project to promote RFID technology in China is underway with the University.
We are a sponsor of – and hold the worldwide rights to supply all tags and woven labels for retailers participating in – the Aid by Trade Foundation’s Cotton Made in Africa Project. This project provides a way for African farmers to compete in the global marketplace, while offering Avery Dennison customers a wide range of practical identification solutions. At the same time, the partnership is creating opportunities for sustainable cotton production in one of the poorest regions of the world.
In Bangladesh, we sponsored a month-long “Be Independent” training program for local village women. Women in need learned cutting and sewing techniques that will help them build confidence and encourage their economic independence.
