Item-level RFID
Inventory that meets demand
Leading retailers strive to stock their shelves with the optimal product mix—no small challenge given the scale and complexity of today’s retail supply chains. Avery Dennison is bringing
Wal-Mart and other major retailers an intelligent solution: removable electronic product code-bearing radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. Wal-Mart will use the tags for individual garments in select apparel categories throughout its 3,700 U.S. stores. Unlike barcodes, RFID tags can be read when blocked by other merchandise and even when embedded in a product package with no line of sight required. The resulting data accuracy—98 percent and higher at some retailers—enables workers to anticipate stock-outs and keep shelves full of engaging choices for shoppers.
In this example, the Avery Dennison Greenprint tool illustrates that by replacing virgin polyester fiber with 100% recycled PET fiber, significant savings can be achieved in the amount of fossil fuels and energy used. The example also shows a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and solid wastes in the manufacturing of the raw material fibers.

A greener path to market
Environmentally responsible products contribute to a greener world. With the Avery Dennison Greenprint™ tool, we’re helping our customers understand the environmental consequences of their branding and packaging decisions. Based on Life Cycle Analysis methodology, our Avery Dennison Greenprint tool quantifies the global warming potential, solid waste generation, and use of trees, water, oil and energy associated with the materials in a product. With this intelligence at hand, customers can take action to reduce their environmental footprint and create a powerful differentiator for their businesses.
Labels with TrueBlock technology enable shippers to reuse packaging while saving time and money.
TrueBlock Technology
Thinking outside the box
Whether it’s for a large company or an individual, anyone can re-use boxes to ship packages using Avery® shipping labels with TrueBlock® technology. Labels with TrueBlock technology are designed to cover previously used labels so completely that nothing shows through. As a result, consumers save time, money and resources by quickly printing out a label and applying it over existing packaging. It’s a smart solution that’s also a big idea—doing more with less.
The Avery Dennison Flexis™ steam valve, pictured here, helps control steam release to simplify microwave food preparation and enhance flavor.
Valve Technology
Innovation that enhances and preserves
Our new Avery Dennison Flexis™ valve technology makes packaging smarter. The heat-activated Flexis steam valve, designed for microwave and oven cooking, can precisely control steam release to simplify food preparation, enhance flavor and preserve nutrients. The valve has enabled the design of new pouch packages for single-serve microwaveable meals that eliminate the tray, film seal and cardboard box of a conventional meal. The Avery Dennison Flexis™ air valve controls airflow into and out of packaging for dry goods products such as pet food and helps protect the contents from dirt, dust, moisture and other contaminants. Avery Dennison Flexis™ valve technology is being applied to other package designs as well.
Our multilayer barrier film will help control odor by preventing moisture and oxygen penetration and reducing bacteria such as E. coli, shown here.
Medical Film
Patient-friendly
Ostomy users can face significant quality-of-life challenges every day. But thanks to a new multilayer barrier film from Avery Dennison Medical Solutions, they will soon be able to experience new levels of confidence and comfort. Each layer of the barrier film is being designed to fulfill a critical purpose: an antimicrobial* interior layer to help control odor and reduce gas build-up, with additional layers to provide enhanced strength and secure bonding. Along with being quieter, softer and more discreet than current products, the film will offer another important benefit: it will be PVC- and PVdC-free.

Real-time Pricing
Dynamic pricing, smarter retailing
Finding new ways to mark the price of goods is more than part of our history—it’s a dynamic part of our future. Avery Dennison is exploring a “digital” price tag that will allow price changes to be made almost instantly in response to sales trends and inventory needs. Once a price change is wirelessly transmitted, the updated price would be displayed immediately on a digital display for relevant items, giving retailers real-time intelligence to adjust prices.
