Paper fibers are the basis for a wide range of packaging materials, with paper and fiber-based packaging often used in the retail and food sectors as a lightweight container solution for in-store distribution of consumer goods. In the logistics and e-commerce industries, cardboard packaging is most commonly used for transport and storage due to its strength and durability.

With options made from renewable, biobased sources, a high recycling rate, and the ability to biodegrade, they’re a sustainable choice for various packaging materials.

How paper and cardboard is recycled

Recycling paper and cardboard is widely practiced and can be highly effective, but contamination can reduce the quality of the recovered fibers. Depending on local guidelines, certain items — such as grease-stained boxes or envelopes with plastic windows — may not be recyclable. Increasing the amount of clean, properly sorted paper and cardboard collected for recycling helps strengthen overall material recovery.

  • Paper and cardboard are sorted by type, grade and color to remove contaminants and prepare them for recycling.
  • The sorted material is pulped and cleaned to remove inks, adhesives and impurities, then screened to ensure consistent quality.
  • The cleaned pulp is spread onto moving screens to drain the water, then pressed and heated to dry the fibers into new paper.
