What attracted you to your chosen work?

It was the Early Career Program (ECP) that Avery Dennison offers. While doing my Master's in Strategic Marketing, I was keen to continue learning in the workplace, and the ECP seemed like the right program. I did not know much about the label business. Still, I did know that the global presence of Avery Dennison and the passion of the people I met during the interview process could help me grow as a marketing specialist and drive tangible impact. Hearing that I would be joining the Product Management team made the 24-year-old graduate feel like a true professional.

What skills did you develop early that are still useful today?

One skill I developed early on, and still rely on heavily, is what I think of as 'working backwards.' I start by clearly defining the desired result or goal. Then, I map out the steps needed to achieve it from the end to beginning. This involves identifying the areas where change or improvement is necessary, understanding which stakeholders must be involved and determining how I can best facilitate the process. This approach has proven very useful, because it often reveals discrepancies between current practices and the desired outcome, allowing me to adjust and ensure that I (or my project team) stay aligned with the objective.

How have you grown in your career at Avery Dennison?

I started as an ECP Associate in 2019 and joined the Product Management team in the European Labels and Graphics Materials function. I was equally excited and nervous in the first few months, but I was surrounded by supportive and encouraging colleagues and managers who inspired me to go the extra mile. Through various projects and roles, I had the chance to learn and influence different parts of the business and offer my expertise. I knew from one side of the company to the other. However, I would not have been able to grow my career as I did without the support of the people around me offering advice, giving feedback and challenging me, sharing their knowledge with me and cheering me on. I will always be grateful for that and want to return the favor.

What's the biggest stretch opportunity you've taken on?

Moving from the Materials Group to the Solutions Group was quite the jump into the unknown. Not only was I changing the role type (from Product Manager to Analyst), but I was also diving into a different technology and segment focus. When you move from a role you've had for some time and feel pretty confident in, to one that requires you to learn new skills and absorb new information, it can initially feel intimidating. However, considering the fact that I am still working in this division, it's been a successful leap.

What role has mentorship played in your career?

Mentors have been invaluable when I navigated through the early years of my career, and now. I have had several mentors throughout my years in Avery Dennison, both formal and informal, and I encourage everyone to do so, too. It's great having someone you look up to who questions in a judgment-free zone. Oftentimes, the best tips I have received were those that would never cross my mind.

What's the best career decision you've ever made?

During my studies, I was unsure about what I wanted to specialize in, so after my Bachelor's degree, I decided to start working in a corporate setting. Working for 2 years in Inside Sales, it became clear that I am passionate about marketing and decided to move countries to pursue a Master’s degree in Strategic Marketing, during which I was able to join Avery Dennison's Early Career Program. It was a great decision that ultimately allowed me to follow a career choice that gives me joy and professional fulfillment.

As you think about the next steps in your career, what are the most important actions you plan to take?

A piece of advice I have received early in my career is to ensure you have a strong network within your company and make your work known to internal stakeholders. This was incredibly helpful and relevant, as I was able to participate in many interesting and exciting projects. It also allowed me to progress in my career and work in different functions. I want to continue building and strengthening my network, so I don't miss out on any opportunities I might otherwise be unaware of.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

I appreciate the opportunity to connect with others. Avery Dennison's positive culture has allowed me to build relationships with knowledgeable, inspiring colleagues. I  interact with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds on a daily basis, from whom I continuously learn professionally and personally. That has been true regardless of the role and team I have been a part of.
