What happens when you put exceptional tools in the hands of exceptional people

Most conversations about artificial intelligence in the C-suite focus on the future. We talk about what AI will eventually do, how it might transform whole industries, or where the technology is heading next.
That focus is incomplete.
AI does not transform an enterprise on its own. The real determinant of value is whether an organization has built the operational and cultural readiness to absorb, scale, and discipline its application.
At Avery Dennison IT, our approach to AI is grounded in a simple reality: before you can capture the exponential benefits of advanced intelligence, you must establish the operational discipline, process clarity, and human readiness to support it.
We do not claim to have perfected this journey. True process redesign across a global footprint is complex, iterative work, and we continually refine our approach. But by focusing on core enablement alongside concrete, measurable value, we are turning enterprise AI into a practical driver of performance.
Grounding adoption in tangible scale
To build genuine organizational capacity with AI, adoption cannot be treated as an isolated experiment. It requires broad, everyday engagement paired with a clear cadence of execution.
In IT, we operationalize and track our AI execution across four primary enterprise focus areas:
Commercial & innovation enablement: Advancing sales, marketing, R&D, and sustainability capabilities through data-driven digital solutions that improve speed and decision-making.
Factory excellence: Enhancing manufacturing, supply chain, procurement, and logistics performance through connected operations, standardized processes, and automation.
Functional empowerment: Strengthening core functions like Finance, HR, Legal, and IT by simplifying processes, boosting productivity, and improving collaboration.
Enterprise foundations: Providing the secure, scalable digital architecture, infrastructure, and technology standards that power the entire company.
Tracking our progress across these areas shows where adoption is taking root. In the second quarter alone, 76% of all our Google Gemini license holders proactively leveraged the technology in their daily work. Across the enterprise, those interactions accumulated to hundreds of hours of productivity saved in a single quarter.
The numbers matter not because they reflect technology usage, but because they represent time returned to our people. When routine administrative tasks are streamlined, employees gain the capacity to focus on strategic execution, cross-functional collaboration, and high-value decision-making.
Driving Value beyond efficiency
Productivity metrics provide a baseline for adoption, but efficiency alone is not the ultimate objective. Crucially, AI is not the goal—it is a force multiplier of value. The real promise of artificial intelligence lies in its ability to amplify human capability and translate time saved into tangible top-line growth, margin expansion, and organizational agility
Across our focus areas, we target core business drivers where AI transforms operational speed into commercial advantage:
Accelerating commercial impact: Our sales and product marketing teams combine Google Apps Script workflows with Gemini to automatically capture and route competitive market insights from raw photos and documents. Beyond eliminating manual data entry, this provides sales teams with instant visibility into market dynamics—enabling them to respond to customer needs faster and make better-informed decisions that drive commercial growth.
Strengthening operational resilience: Within our Label and Packaging Materials Operations, teams leverage Gemini Gems to auto-optimize complex SQL scripts. By keeping critical business reporting fast and reliable, supply chain leaders gain the real-time visibility needed to make agile operational decisions and protect service performance.
Multiplying enterprise capabilities: Through the AD Agent Marketplace, we provide employees with a centralized platform to discover, share, and reuse proven AI solutions built on platforms such as Gemini and Oracle. Growing to over hundreds of published agents used by thousands of employees, the marketplace shifts us from isolated team wins to enterprise-scale capabilities—rapidly compounding the return on our digital investments.
Redesigning the foundation
When we evaluate where AI can deliver its greatest impact, we consistently return to a fundamental truth: automating a broken workflow only produces faster complexity.
True enterprise readiness requires us to simplify and standardize our ways of working before introducing automation. That means challenging legacy approval loops, eliminating redundant handoffs, and designing processes around desired outcomes rather than historical structures.
When exceptional tools are placed in the hands of curious, disciplined, and empowered teams, technology stops being an isolated IT initiative. It becomes an enterprise capability, expanding what our organization can achieve and delivering lasting value for our customers, shareholders, and teams.
