What attracted you to your chosen work?

I have always been passionate about technology and problem-solving, which naturally led me to this field. With a PhD in Electrical Engineering, I started my career in research, specializing in cognitive radio, machine learning, optimization, and wireless network protocols.

As I transitioned into the industry, I initially worked on custom technical development, building tailored solutions for specific customer needs. Over time, I moved into a more strategic role, focusing on feasibility studies for new technologies and developing platform-based solutions to address future challenges. Instead of creating one-off solutions, I now work on scalable innovations that have a broader impact across multiple customers and industries. This shift has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to combine my technical expertise with a long-term vision for innovation.

What skills did you develop early that are still useful today?

During my years in research, I developed strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills. My background in data signal processing, image processing, machine learning, and wireless network communications and protocols helped me build a structured approach to tackling complex problems.

I apply research methodologies and the scientific method to every new challenge, allowing me to break down problems systematically, analyze patterns, and explore multiple solutions. This approach has been invaluable in evaluating new technologies, conducting feasibility studies, and designing platform-based solutions. While this mindset is common in academic or R&D settings, it brings a unique perspective to my team, where most of my colleagues come from different backgrounds. It enables me to approach challenges methodically and ensure that our innovations are both technically sound and strategically scalable.

How have you grown in your career at Avery Dennison?

My journey at Avery Dennison has been one of continuous growth and transformation. Early on, I focused on technical development, but over time, I evolved into a more strategic role, looking at the bigger picture of how technology can shape the future. Working in a platform innovation team, I have learned to shift from solving isolated technical challenges to building scalable solutions that drive long-term impact.

Avery Dennison has provided an environment where I can expand my expertise beyond technology. I’ve learned to navigate business dynamics, collaborate across global teams, and align innovation with industry needs. This exposure has helped me develop a more holistic perspective, allowing me to drive projects that not only solve technical problems but also create real business value.

What's the biggest stretch opportunity you've taken on?

My current role has been my biggest stretch opportunity. It has pushed me beyond providing technical solutions and into a space where I assess new technologies, conduct feasibility studies, and develop scalable innovations. Instead of focusing on custom developments for specific customers, I now work on creating platform-based solutions that address broader industry challenges.

Additionally, my team plays a crucial role in rolling out these solutions globally, which presents significant standardization, adoption, and scalability challenges. This shift from project-based technical support to global innovation has expanded my skill set and allowed me to make a much larger impact.

What role has mentorship played in your career?

Mentorship has been one of the most influential factors in my career. I’ve had the privilege of working with great mentors who have shaped my thinking and professional growth.

One of my early mentors, George Rafael, played a key role in helping me transition from a tactical mindset to a more strategic approach. He encouraged me to think beyond immediate technical challenges and consider long-term innovation.

My current manager, Edward McGinnis, has also had a significant impact. He fosters innovation within the team, ensuring each member is in the proper role to maximize their strengths. His leadership style is empowering. He provides support when needed while allowing his team the freedom to innovate. His vision aligns closely with mine, and our collaboration has helped shape more comprehensive, end-to-end solutions for the business.

What I enjoy most is the opportunity to solve complex challenges and drive meaningful innovation... Every project is an opportunity to learn from others.

What's the best career decision you've ever made?

The best decision I made was transitioning from research into the industry. While I loved the problem-solving nature of research, I wanted to apply my skills in a way that had a more direct, tangible impact. Moving into an industry role allowed me to use my technical expertise to develop real-world solutions that address business and industry challenges.

Another important decision was staying committed to my role at a critical point in my career. There was a time when I considered changing paths, but after careful reflection, I realized that perseverance and strategic growth within my current field would lead to greater opportunities. Looking back, I’m confident that staying the course was the right choice.

As you think about the next steps in your career, what are the most important actions you plan to take?

Moving forward, I want to continue driving innovation by broadening my perspective and expanding my network. Learning from industry leaders within and outside the organization will be key to staying ahead of emerging trends. In particular, I aim to develop breakthrough solutions that align with today’s technological shifts, such as data analysis, automation, and intelligent systems, ensuring our innovations remain scalable and impactful.

Additionally, I want to focus on strengthening my team. Building a strong leadership layer within my team will ensure we can operate effectively and scale our initiatives. If my team is equipped with the right skills and structure, many operational challenges will already be addressed. Lastly, I want to prepare my successor, ensuring that the foundation we have built continues to evolve and grow.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

What I enjoy most is the opportunity to solve complex challenges and drive meaningful innovation. My work allows me to explore new technologies, think critically about future trends, and develop solutions that have a lasting impact. I thrive on problem-solving, and seeing an idea evolve from a concept to a fully implemented solution is incredibly fulfilling.

Additionally, I love the collaborative environment at Avery Dennison. Our team brings diverse perspectives and expertise, and every project is an opportunity to learn from others. The ability to work with talented individuals across different disciplines keeps me motivated and constantly growing.
