This year, we are celebrating Avery Dennison Reflective Solutions' 50th anniversary in Brazil. Our team addresses many unique challenges in this region. Brazil's vast road network, coupled with a growing number of vehicles, presents significant challenges for traffic management. Mobility and safety are at the forefront, given the intricate nature of the traffic system. The increasing rate of accidents requires a fresh approach from authorities and highlights the importance of public awareness campaigns, such as the recent 'Yellow May' initiative.
The nation's infrastructure requires significant enhancements. According to statistics from the National Transport Confederation, only about 14% of our extensive network of roads and highways, spanning nearly two million kilometers, are paved. Equally crucial is the improvement of signage, as over 40% of these roadways lack proper signage. Traffic signs help prevent accidents, reduce traffic jams, and ensure traffic flow by providing important information. That includes guiding and warning everyone who shares the same ecosystem: pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
Evolution in safety
The good news is that we have seen considerable evolution in the available signaling structures in recent years. In terms of safety, innovations such as reflective solutions have contributed significantly to traffic safety, as their essence is to guarantee visibility, legibility, conspicuity and standardization of colors and formats of signs and other structures, even if the roads have extreme conditions such as rain, fog and little or no lighting. They allow decisions to be made immediately, identifying information and alerts, even from a certain distance.
With safety in mind, reflective traffic signs are part of a set of initiatives that must be evaluated and considered by the responsible organizations in their continuous regulatory update with the best international standards and practices in their implementation and inspection, especially when we talk about roads and highways under public administration.
The private sector, which has several roads under concession and directs efforts towards continuous improvement projects, has already considered these investments, justified by reduced costs associated with accidents and lower road maintenance rates. Durable and resistant to the effects of time, with a longer useful life, the sustainable contributions of reflective solutions are also a premise to be considered in road management.
How are we contributing to improving traffic safety?
Here at Avery Dennison Reflective Solutions, our products are primarily used in road traffic signs on highways, roads and municipal streets. Another part of our portfolio aims to signal construction areas and vehicle safety, such as reflective tapes and bumpers, vehicle license plates, and identification of emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, firefighters and police vehicles.
Another highlight is our TrafficJet™ Print System, representing the most significant evolution in manufacturing printed signs. Through it, we reduce the complexity of developing the most diverse projects, as it is a complete solution with films, inks, overlays, and technical service support with factory layout and installation.
But our main advantage, which allows us to contribute to safer traffic, is our team. Currently, our team has many years of integrated and consolidated work, with vast technical knowledge that allows us to offer training, seminars and workshops to customers, end users, and public organizations and their employees.
These initiatives add value to our commitment to continuously supplying the industry with innovative products. Knowledge and awareness justify the means to invest in increasingly better and smarter traffic. This is undoubtedly an important step towards preventing accidents and protecting and valuing life on roads and highways.
